Green Infrastructure (GI)

We note that this local Plan does not include a stand-alone GI policy. We would encourage the local
plan to include a clear and robust policy on green and blue infrastructure, which aims to establish,
restore, enhance and maintain coherent ecological networks. The local plan should identify and
promote GI, seeking opportunities to create, maintain and enhance resilient and coherent ecological
networks across the district, including the protection and recovery of priority species and habitats.

This should be supported by an up-to-date evidence base, including mapping of ecological networks
and opportunity areas within the district. We refer to the document: Green Infrastructure Planning and
Delivery in Kent and Medway (KCC, September 2017), which you may find useful in developing GI
ambitions for the district. The supporting text (3.7) includes reference to Biodiversity Opportunity
Areas (BOA), however these are not indicated or further supported elsewhere within the plan. It may
be beneficial to include BOAs on policy mapping, to integrate BOAs with other policy aims such as
net gain and GI.

Natural England would be very keen to discuss with your authority in more detail a GI strategy for
your district.
