Policy 18 Health and Wellbeing, Air Quality, Climate Change and Flooding

We welcome the clear framework on the type of proposals likely to be supported (and vice versa).
Clear guidance is provided on the supporting information required, and how proposals will be judged
with regards to health and wellbeing, air quality, climate change and flooding.

High quality, sustainable design incorporating appropriate landscaping such as tree screening,
strategic tree planting and green roofs can assist with air quality improvements, urban cooling,
managing water flows and reducing the impacts of flooding. These benefits are provided alongside
additional benefits for human health and wellbeing, ecological enhancements, net gain and
contribution to the GI network.

The supporting text (particularly paragraphs 8.15 to 8.17) recognises the multifunctional aspect of GI
and SuDs features, and the various benefits these features can provide for human health and
wellbeing and the wider environment. This should be reinforced in the policy text, to ensure such
features are embedded in proposals from the outset. Clear links to Policy 6 (Safeguarding Places for
Wildlife and Nature) would support the inclusion of features which contribute to the wider ecological
network, and ensure net gains for nature.
