In general CPRE Kent supports a development strategy which meets the following criteria:

  1. It prioritises the redevelopment of appropriate, sustainably located previously developed land. It does not support development on locally defined brownfield land in unsustainable locations.
  2. It does not lead to the loss of best and most versatile agricultural land, Green Belt, AONBs and other designations.
  3. It focuses growth at existing settlements and maximises supply through increased densities at sustainable locations.
  4. It recognises the acute need for rural affordable housing.

We give particular weight to protecting the countryside, and therefore the policies which serve that purpose have for us an overriding importance in the Draft Local Plan (DLP). However, they may also represent ‘constraint’ from the development point of view, which means that some DLP proposals, for housing development in particular, conflict with the need to protect the Green Belt and designated landscape.
