The policy should be expanded to ensure that improvements to existing open spaces are made in consultation with the local community.  Also, children's play space does not always have to include attractive and engaging equipment.  There are other forms of play.   When money is invested in new play equipment, a wider range of ages should be considered and more local consultation with potential users carried out before spending money on a "standard" range of equipment which might not engage many in that particular locality.  For example, the equipment in Stangrove Park, Edenbridge is very limiting and only of appeal to very young children.

The SDC proposals for the Open Spaces on the Stangrove Estate includes benches as a lack of benches is considered to be a lower quality of provision in the open space assessment methodology.  Again, this is an inflexible way of thinking about how outdoor space might be used and ignores the pitfalls of providing benches - ranging from a waste of money when they are not used through to encouraging undesirable behaviours  which might detract from the spaces for the majority.
