3 - Safeguarding Places for Wildlife and Nature A new paragraph is needed at page 50 after 3.10 as follows: "The Council is the lead partner in the 'Sevenoaks Greensand Commons' project which has been awarded a significant grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to conserve, improve and promote the Commons that fall under the Council's management. The Commons cover over 300ha from Hosey Common in the west to Seal Chart in the east. They are connected to the long distance Greensand Way and to the

Policy 6 - whilst we agree the general aims of this policy to safeguard places for wildlife and nature the wording as proposed relating to new development should make it clear that in some cases it will be necessary to lose trees, vegetation , hedgerows etc. to permit development . Our concern relates to the words 'as is feasible' which are open to differing interpretation and thus dispute King & Johnston Homes

KPC strongly supports this policy. Any new planting to extend existing habitats and create green corridors should be with indigenous plants.

Policy 6 - Wildlife COMMENT Is SDC budgeting for enhancements? Or relying entirely on developer contributions? SUGGESTED CHANGE TO DRAFT New Development Para 1…Proposals for new development must retain ALL existing natural features... Para 2… possibly redraft to a stronger statement eg The protection of Ancient and Veteran Trees MUST be incorporated in future development proposals. Para 5… Remove the word "unavoidable" as impacts can be subjective.

Support this policy which is consistent with the revised NPPF in respect of AONBs as set out at paragraph 172 which specifies that the conservation and enhancement of wildlife is important within AONBs as well as policy BD1 and BD5 of the Kent Downs AONB Management Plan.

Suggest enabling community growing projects on new developments. A great example is the Incredible Edible: https://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/ This addresses social isolation, creates habitats for wildlife, especially pollinators, and encourages healthy eating/ reduces food poverty.

In general I think this is a well thought out chapter and policy, which seems to genuinely take the needs of wildlife into consideration. Please be aware of Natural Flood Management techniques. https://www.sepa.org.uk/media/163560/sepa-natural-flood-management-handbook1.pdf [https://www.sepa.org.uk/media/163560/sepa-natural-flood-management-handbook1.pdf ] These can be small or large scale; NWKCP is currently delivering the KCC Natural Flood Management contract for West Kent and can be consulte
